RetaLac
Introduced by MEGGLE Company as a new excipient for RETARD tablet formulation.

RetaLac® is a spray agglomerated blend of 50 parts lactose monohydrate [Ph.Eur/USP-NF/JP] and 50 parts hypromellose [Ph.Eur/USP-NF/JP].

It comes as a white, or almost white, and odourless powder. Unlike typical pure hypromellose, RetaLac®dissolves easily and is partially soluble in cold water.

RetaLac® consists of lactose and hypromellose particles in a granular form. The SEM picture shows the typical particles of RetaLac®, demonstrating the nature of a one-body co-processed excipient. As a co-processed excipient, the two components cannot be separated by physical methods, therefore ensuring content uniformity and preventing the possibility of production segregation during processing. Upon complete dissolution in water, individual components of RetaLac® can be separated.

Typical applications are:

Direct compression, especially for sustained release formulation

Replacement of formulations using wet granulation
